In 1887, the foundation of the wooden Michael the Archangel Church was laid. The new church was built within two years with donations collected in the amount of 13,000 rubles thanks to the fees of both residents of the city and representatives of all regions of the empire. St. Michael the Archangel Church was popularly called ‘merchant’, since it was the merchants who made a great contribution to raising money for the temple’s construction.
The wooden church in honor of Archangel Michael had a size of 19 by 18 meters (or 9 by 8.5 fathoms) and was built without a single nail. The church was a one-of-a-kind facility of the tent style in architecture. The tent design in Russian architecture replaced the domes in wooden construction. In wooden buildings, unlike stone ones, it is extremely difficult to reproduce the shape of the dome, the tent’s design is simpler. It was the tents that gave the buildings a magnificent pillar-shaped outline.

These days, the central city market or ‘lower wholesale’ is located on the site of the St. Michael the Archangel Church.
