The first religious temple in Akmolinsk was the cathedral mosque. It was built in 1838-1842 at the expense of Konurkulzhi Kudaimendin, Senior Sultan of the Akmola district. It was located at the current intersection of Imanov and Auezov streets (Imanov Street was previously called Mosque).

The Cathedral Mosque was built of wood on a brick foundation. The mosque was a rectangular one-story building, to which the mihrab (altar) adjoined from the south-western side. The minaret was located above the main wall separating the prayer hall and a small lobby. The octagonal minaret cut through the double-pitch roof and ended with a high cone-type tent. This type of ‘a mosque with a minaret on the roof’ is a vivid example of the symbiosis of Islamic architecture and traditional wooden architecture. The elements of the Tatar houses decor can be traced in the exterior design.

The mosque became not only the first religious building of the city, but also the tallest, thanks to the minaret. The approximate height of the mosque with a crescent was 20 meters.
In 1920, this mosque burned down during a fire. And then, with donations from parishioners, mainly the Koschegulovs family, the mosque was rebuilt from red-hot (burnt) red bricks (the building is stone, i.e. brick). It was popularly called the ‘Stone Mosque’ or the ‘Red Mosque’.

Now, on the site of the very first mosque in Akmolinsk, there is a residential building No. 2 on A.Imanov street (intersection of Imanov – Auezov streets).
