The Cathedral Mosque of Akmolinsk or the Green Mosque was built in 1895 with the parishioners’ money. A significant part of the funds was allocated by the Tatar merchant Nurken (Nurkey) Zabirov. It was nicknamed ‘green’ because the roof was painted with green oil paints. By its architecture, the mosque corresponded to the traditional Tatar style. It consisted of a number of longitudinal-axial cubing, in the north-eastern part of which there was a three-tiered hexagonal minaret with tent-shaped roofing. On the opposite side there was a dome over the mihrab.

The religious building was located at the intersection of Abay (former Church) streets and the Republic Avenue. Today, only the fencing fragments – a mosque fence with a length of more than 70 meters had remained at this place.

In 1929, after the mosque had been closed, there was a Pioneer House here, in 1950 the remains of the wooden mosque were demolished and a three-story residential building for party workers was built.
