Project title: Academic promotion and remuneration policies at private higher education institutions in Kazakhstan

Years: May – December 2023

Funding: Central Asian Research Centre for Education Innovation and Transformation

Description: Private universities in Kazakhstan function in a growing competitive environment. They compete today not only for talented students but also for talented faculty who can contribute to quality assurance in teaching, research, or service to society. To hire and retain talented faculty, private universities develop new academic career structures and introduce new academic promotion and faculty remuneration policies. In many cases, these new policies are based on international best practices and are rarely informed by empirical evidence collected locally. This project focuses on investigating academic career systems of private universities in Kazakhstan. In particular, it attempts to build a contextual and nuanced understanding of how faculty working at private universities in Kazakhstan make sense of the changing academic career systems and how their perceptions of these changes influence their academic performance and professional self-identification.
