The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was found on the central square on May 12, 1891 in memory of saving the life of Emperor Alexander III and his family in a railway accident. The accident occurred on October 17, 1888 on the Kursk-Kharkiv highway. The construction was headed by Pavel Stepanovich Golyshev, the eminent engineer, invited from Tobolsk.

By approximate estimates, the construction of the temple cost 26 thousand rubles. The city authorities were able to allocate only 5 thousand. The rest of the amount was collected by the parishioners. The main amount was collected by well-known merchants V. N. Popov, P. S. Marfutin, M. K. Kubrin, I. S. Silin and others. For the construction of the cathedral merchant V. Popov donated 100 thousand pieces of burnt bricks. Merchant P. Marfutin made an iron fence at his own expense and cast a complete set of bells, the heaviest of which weighed 104 pounds (1700 kg).

In 1914, M. I.Timofeev, Moscow painter, a student of M. Vasnetsov, was invited to paint the cathedral
The consecration of the new stone Alexander Nevsky Church took place on August 26, 1893. P.Plotnikov, a graduate of the Tobolsk Theological Seminary, was appointed as the priest of the new church.

The cathedral could accommodate up to 1,000 people and was a stone building with three bulbous domes and an octagonal bell tower. The height of the temple was 36 meters. The facades of the cathedral were decorated with snow-white stucco walls, a tall slender bell tower, bright green domes, gold-covered onion domes and crosses, hammered iron fencing, three stone entrance gates, a porch, choir place, and a monumental mural painting.

After the establishment of Soviet power, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was given to the House of Culture, Theater and Cinema. In 1939, the demolition of the cathedral began, but it turned out to be too strong. Therefore, in 1940 it was blown up.

In February 1940, according to the urban beautification plan, a square and a flower garden with an area of 400 square meters were built in its place . Then, in 1964, the House of Soviets was erected. After the reconstruction during the period of independence, there were various administrative state bodies, and now it is the city akimat.
